Coming to a Computer Near You

Great news. Your librarians have been working overtime and, as I type, we have 200 books entered in our computerized catalogue. By the time you read this article that number should be close to 300 titles. Even more exciting, we hope to make the catalogue accessible through Grace Church's website by the end of this calendar year. From the comfort of your own home, you will be able to view it. In preparation for Christmas, you might want to see what books are available in Grace Church on-the-Hill's Library about Advent and Christmas. Come into the Library any Tuesday afternoon between 2 an 4:30, or most Sundays between the 9:15 and 11 o'clock services for a quick tutorial on Resource Mate, our friendly catalogue software. And when you borrow a book (or several books), please remember to include your phone number when you sign the card.

Grace Church on-the-Hill Library

The purpose of the Grace Church on-the-Hill Library is to support all members of our congregation as they respond to Christ's command to love God and to love our neighbours as ourselves.

Collection Guidelines

As we add books to the Library's collection, we hope:

(a) to increase the congregation's knowledge of the scriptures, of the history of the church, and of the Anglican tradition in particular; and

(b) to support congregation members at key moments in their lives including birth and baptism, marriage and divorce, and aging and death.

Children's Collection

"Since a child does not differentiate his interests as does an adult, good books of all kinds—not just religious—should be placed on their shelves." [Erwin, John E. The Key to a Successful Church Library. Rev. ed. Minneapolis, MN : Augsburg, c1967.] In consultation with Francesca Mallin-Parker, we are following John Erwin's advice as we continue to build this area of the Library.

Special Collection

The Grace Church on-the-Hill Book & Film Group has made a practice of donating a copy of each book discussed to the Library. The result is a small but varied and inviting section of the Library.

Visiting the Library and Borrowing Books

The Grace Church librarians try to provide "Library Hours" every Tuesday from 2 to 4:30. As well, we will try to have somebody in the Library between the 9:15 and 11 o'clock services most Sundays. At other times congregation members are welcome to visit and to borrow books whenever they wish, however it is a good idea, before planning a visit, to call the Church Director of Property Management to ensure that no other group will be using the Library. Like all other rooms in the Church, the Library is frequently used for meetings.

The Circulation System is self-service. Signs are posted in the Library explaining how to borrow books, and when and where to return them. Please pay special attention to the request that you include your phone number AND the date you are borrowing the book when you sign the borrower's card.
