Milton’s Paradise Lost
John Milton, the blind, Puritan prophet, is considered one of the greatest poets of the English language because he tells us so fully what it is to be human. His great epic Paradise Lost (1668) re-tells the story of the fall of Adam and Eve in Genesis.
Join us for this five-week mini-course in Milton in which we will read selections from Paradise Lost to come to a richer understanding of this at once complex and engaging interpretation of scripture, myth, and history. We will focus on Milton’s great cast of characters — Adam, Eve, God, Christ, Raphael, and of course the fallen Archangel, Satan. We will see how Milton presents the fall as a complex family drama, the result of the rivalry between God’s only begotten son and the archangel who thought that role might be his. Throughout we will consider Milton’s interpretation of the fall as fortunate, because essential to coming to fuller knowledge of God.
